Self control, as a fruit of the Spirit protects us like a wall protects a city. This final installment on the fruit of the Holy spirit exemplifies the relationship between law and grace, between freedom and bondage.
As Christians we are not just set free from bondage of law, we are also set free from the bondage of sin. This is because of the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit.
The world operates in a contrary way. It demands tit for tat. In order to get something, you must give or do something in return. But grace and blessing operate differently. When we are born again by the power of the Holy Spirit and we make Jesus Christ our lord and Savior, we accept the grace and blessing as a free gift. The problem is that we are blinded to the truth of the word. Our flesh will not let us believe and we become trapped in performance orientation.
We live in liberty. But liberty is not an excuse to indulge in the deeds of the flesh. Liberty is the basis on which we enjoy the privilege of bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit by walking in total dependence on Him – freely walking in the freedom and bearing fruit based on the power of the Holy Spirit in us.
Proverbs 25:28 New King James Version (NKJV)
28 Whoever has no rule over his own spirit
Is like a city broken down, without walls.
If you don’t have rule over your own spirit, If you’re operating in the flesh, you don’t have any protection. You are vulnerable to every attack whether it be physical, whether it be mental, whether it be emotional or spiritual.
This is self control, that you have rule over your own spirit and are not operating in the flesh.
