God’s promises and covenants to Abraham are a foreshadowing of their completion in Jesus Christ to us.
Just as with Abram/Abraham we are on a journey with God as we follow him to the promised land. His promise to us takes us to a place of great blessing. A place where enemies are dislodged, where prosperity is developed, and where we are free to worship him.
Genesis 15:13-18 New King James Version (NKJV)
13 Then He said to Abram: “Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years. 14 And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions. 15 Now as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age. 16 But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”
17 And it came to pass, when the sun went down and it was dark, that behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning torch that passed between those pieces. 18 On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying:
“To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates—
When this promise to Abraham began to come to pass, God blessed Abraham’s descendants in the desert with manna from heaven. Many years later their descendants took the promised land in battle and occupied it in safety as they were blessed with its produce (milk and honey).
Taken as an allegory for our lives, we also walk with God and follow Jesus through the desert as he provides for us. Because we have the Holy Spirit on the inside of us, we release God’s power through us in prayer and blessings begin to follow.
God begins to instruct, teach and honor his very nature in his plan for his children. God found Abram and said, “I am going to covenant with you and give you the plan for my people.” God does that in families. God will work with you and speak to you and he will give you the plan that he wants for your family.
