Instructions on how to handle your treasures comprises more scriptures in the sermon on the mount than any other topic. Here we discuss treasures or wealth.
When Jesus launched his ministry, he went around among the people and healed the sick and drove out demons. He spoke with authority and people came from all around to get what had been missing from the teachings of the religious leaders.
This final installment on the Sermon on the mount reviews instructions on how to deal with your wealth and what is true wealth. Wealth is not the absence of money. If you are born again today, you already posess the greatest wealth in the universe. And that is called eternal life. So you are a wealthy person.
Well if you posses the greatest wealth ever known to mankind, then you start doing some things and start lining some things up and start listening to the one who granted it to you. He’s going to bring some other things into your life.
Matthew 6:19-2 1New King James Version (NKJV)
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
In ancient times, treasures were fine clothes, polished armor, weapons and gold and jewels. They were all vulnerable to moths, rust, and thieves. Everything you have is vulnerable to the thief that will kill, steal, and destroy if you are trying to battle him with earthly things.
